Pilipino Library: EDSA
Through colors, pictures, sounds and numbers, Edsa is a beautiful book that teaches children simply about a significant event in Filipino history.
In 1986 February 22-25 over two million Filipino civilians, religious and military groups took the streets in a peaceful protest against the Marcos administration which eventually lead to the departure of the president. The Philippines now observes People Power Revolution as a national holiday every February 25.
Edsa, created by Molino & Bumatay, uses different sights and senses to share a glimpse of what it might have been like to be in the sea of yellow on that day. The art alone is worthy of a admiration. Since the book is completely in Filipino, I ask Ate Chanda to help me make my way through it.
As mentioned in my previous post, when we learn our (host) countries culture and history we feel more connected. So this February 25 when it seems like one of the very many holidays in the Filipino calendar, you now know the real reason for the day off and for what a powerful reason it is.
