What food do you typically eat on long road trips here? I bet I can guess: McDonalds? My husband swore of McD's last year so we had to get pretty creative with our food while on road trips, it was actually a really awesome stretching experience. For this Pilipino Pantry series I give to you: Road Trip Food.

This isn't the complete list, obviously, but these are some of our favorite foods and methods that sustain us while road tripping.

Bibingka is a type of rice and coconut cake that really hits homes during the holiday season. However, when we are traveling through Los Baños area I always stop for bibingka on the side of the road. It is not overtly sweet and is naturally gluten free, which is great for my middle son who has a wheat allergy. It is made with rice flour, coconut milk and cooked in coconut husks (uling)!

Pandesal is a slightly sweet toasty ball of bread. We pull over to any malunggay panaderia along the road but especially in Batangas near Nasugbu. For 2 pesos a piece the price cannot be beat. Be careful, they are so addicting! I love to eat with peanut butter and a hard boiled egg on the side. They don't stay soft and crunchy long so make sure to enjoy while they are still fresh. PSST: You can also buy small packets of peanut butter and hardboiled eggs at any convenience stop.

Turon is a sweet merienda or dessert food made of banana wrapped in lumpia wrapper and fried with a bit of sugar that caramelizes on the outside. These are sinfully delicious! We recently lunched at a small eatery, Elizabeths Garden, and they were some of the best I have ever had. I highly recommend a lunch stop here.

My top secret for road tripping on a budget (besides AirBnb): Yum Boxes! We were gifted these by a sweet friend a few months back and they are the single most useful item for my children on road trips. I pack food before our trip, then I use them during our stay and then pack them up one more time for the drive home.

I use them while we travel long distances, on Sundays, day trips and multiple night road trips. I try to include a protein of hard boiled eggs, dairy with cheese, starch with rice or crackers and small treat for the treat tunnel, that one always gets eaten the fastest. I have also started buying lunch meat and cheese for my husband and I to eat along the way and layer in between some fresh pandesal.
