How To Teach Your Child To Speak Filipino: Buksan Ph

My kids know more Filipino than I do. We have now lived here for 9 years, my kids have lived here their whole lives and attended schools where Filipino was a mandatory subject. Their classmates, playmates and yaya are all fluent in Filipino. As for me, I have to actively attempt to learn Filipino as most communication can be done in English in Manila. I think it’s both a blessing and a curse to have English as one of the dominant languages of the Metropolitan. In many Asian countries English is not the dominant language and you are forced by default to learn the native language or at least enough to communicate your needs. One of the reasons I love living out of my home country is because I am stretched everyday to learn something new. It might be a new word, food or cultural practice but everyday I learn and I love it!

I am striving to learn more Filipino with my kids and one of the easiest ways to start is simply with flashcards. Buksan Ph is a company that creates incredible well designed and straightforward flashcards for children to learn Filipino. They are certainly not limited to children as I enjoy using them as well. The teachers at Buksan Ph have continued to make the cards better with each edition. The first edition wasn’t laminated and had a shorter life span, this new set is more durable with thicker paper and each card is laminated.

Buksan Ph offers different sets of flashcards organized by topic and vocabulary. Each set has cards with photos of the vocabulary word and a sample sentence on the other side. I don’t know all the words used so the sample sentences are also helping me learn beyond just the basic vocabulary sets.

I am a huge fan of the simple design. The images are clear and straightforward with enough detail to clearly understand the vocabulary term but not too much that distracts from the learning.

Buksan Ph flashcards are approachable for the individual who speaks no Filipino or the student who has been studying for years. If you’re looking for a way to brush up or learn Filipino for the first time, I say go for it with Buksan Ph!
